Stepping Stone: Rosetta Stone <BR> 11.875H x 9W x 1D
The Armies of Napoleon found the Rosetta Stone in 1799 near the town of Rosetta in Egypt.
It is inscribed with a royal proclamation concerning the crowning of Ptolemy E. Euiphraites the 5th. He was 13 years old.
The decree appears in three scripts: the upper text is Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs, the middle portion is Demotic script, and the lowest is Ancient Greek. The inscription presents essentially the same text in all three scripts (with some minor differences among them), the stone provided the key to the modern understanding of Egyptian Hieroglyphs.
A French language scholar deciphered the text, which required 14 years.
The black basalt slab is now in the British Museum in London, it dates to 196 BC and measures 3’ 9” X 2’ 4”
Stepping stones have hooks on back for display as plaques.
